The year in four parts
| Period | Typical conditions | Type of flying | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | Calm, clear days between frontal systems. The upper sites can close with snow. | Morning glass air, short soaring flights. The 1200 site comes into its own. | Low |
| March to May | Thermals strengthen while the sea breeze is not yet fully established. | The most productive period for thermals and XC. | Moderate |
| June to August | Strong, regular sea breeze, high temperatures, stable air. | Morning and evening windows. Midday is often closed. | Very high |
| September to November | The breeze eases and the air settles. The most reliable period of the year. | Long glides, a second XC window. | Easing |
Month by month
| Month | What stands out | Who for |
|---|---|---|
| January | Calm days and frontal passages alternate. The number of flyable days varies. | Pilots after calm air and no crowds |
| February | Winter conditions continue and the windows are short. | Anyone with a flexible schedule |
| March | Thermals wake up and the air begins to warm. | Pilots wanting to work thermals |
| April | The season opens. Thermals strengthen while the breeze is still weak. | Every level |
| May | One of the best months for XC. Strong thermals without the extreme heat. | XC pilots |
| June | One of the best months for XC. The breeze starts to establish and midday sharpens. | XC pilots, early risers |
| July | Very hot and stable. The breeze pushes the limit around midday. | Pilots using the morning window |
| August | Like July. Tandem traffic at its peak for the year. | Pilots prepared for crowds |
| September | The start of the most settled period. Dry, reliable air. | Every level, first time visitors |
| October | One of the best months for XC and generally the most balanced month of the year. | XC pilots, anyone wanting long flights |
| November | The season closes, conditions soften and the crowds thin out. | Pilots after quiet flying |
| December | Winter begins. Clear, calm days appear between fronts. | Anyone with a flexible schedule |
The generally accepted flying season here is April to November. The site is flown in winter too, but the number of flyable days depends on frontal passages, so you need flexibility in your plans.
Choosing your dates
| What you want | When to come | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To fly the site for the first time | September, October | The most settled air, thinning crowds, long windows |
| To fly XC | May, June, October | Strong thermals and a high cloudbase |
| Quiet flying | November to February | A weak breeze and low traffic |
| To get plenty of flights in | April, September, October | More than one window stays open during the day |
| To avoid the crowds | November to March | Tandem traffic at its lowest |
If you come between June and August, which hour of the day you fly decides more than which month you arrived in. The breeze pushes the 25 km/h limit around midday and the sites can close. Launching early is not a preference in this period, it is usually the only option. The rhythm of the day
