Lists only work once they become habit.

Before you travel

  • Your pilot licence is valid and at least P3.
  • Your personal accident insurance is current and covers your flying dates.
  • Your Slot Service Centre application is submitted and approved.
  • Your reserve parachute repack date is still valid.
  • Your wing has been checked and has not reached the end of its service life.
  • You have a radio. There is no common frequency here, agree one with your group.
  • You know how to read coordinates off your instrument.
  • You have checked the conditions for the season.

Before you go up

  • You have opened your flight in the system and have your QR code.
  • You have checked the flag status and the site you want is green.
  • You have checked the station readings and the wind is below 25 km/h.
  • You know which site works in the current wind direction.
  • You have looked at the chart to see whether the wind is rising or easing.
  • You have checked the wind in the landing area separately.
  • You have left your car below; private vehicles cannot enter the takeoff area.
  • If you are heading for the upper sites, you came up by cable car, which the shuttle requires.

Before takeoff

Do not skip this one

Takeoff is the phase where accidents concentrate at this site. The accident described in the safety bulletin happened because the wind direction was misjudged and deep brake was applied too early.

  • The wind direction and speed suit the aspect of the site.
  • Your helmet is on and the strap fastened.
  • Your leg and chest straps are fastened and checked.
  • Your reserve pin is seated and the handle is reachable.
  • The speed system is connected and not tangled.
  • Lines are clear, risers are straight and the brakes run free.
  • The wing is laid out properly with the leading edge open.
  • Nobody is in your layout area or in front of it.
  • You know where you are heading after takeoff.
  • Wait for the wing to stabilise overhead after inflation; do not apply deep brake early.
  • If the run does not produce a takeoff, end the run.

Before you commit to landing

  • You have decided which area you are landing in and it is clear.
  • You have observed the wind direction in the landing area.
  • You know who is in front of and behind you on the approach line.
  • You are giving priority to the pilot at the lower altitude.
  • You have planned the turn towards the sea in the last two or three metres.
  • If you need an alternative, you made that decision while you still had height.
  • You are clear of the SIV and acro box and the speed fly approach line.

Extra checks for XC

  • You have planned your route and know your landing options.
  • You have loaded current airspace files into your instrument.
  • You know you are leaving the defined flying site and that AIP rules apply out there.
  • Your phone is charged and you carry a power bank.
  • You have water and food.
  • You have told someone your flight plan.
  • You have thought about how you will get back.

After you land

Close your flight

A flight record left open in the system means you are still shown as airborne. That can trigger an unnecessary search and delay someone genuinely missing from being noticed.

  • You have closed your flight in the system.
  • You have gathered your wing quickly and cleared the landing area.
  • If anything happened, you have reported it to the Slot Service Centre.
